INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Officials say a 17-year-old Indianapolis high school student was found dead in a pond on Tuesday. Investigators say their investigation shows that, while in the pond on a hike with two other teens, the teenager went into a wooded area about 50 yards from the water's edge.

Police say 17-year-old Alex Gorman died at the scene.

Copyright by WISH - All rights reserved Police say two other teens were inside the pond when someone made a sudden decision to do something stupid, like try to grab Gorman from behind.

Police say the 17-year-old boy was last seen wearing the same red sweatshirt that Gorman was wearing before he went out on his hike. Investigators say at some point over the summer, he was dropped off in his hometown.

"He looked the part and at some point he got caught up with some teenagers at a campground on that trail and then his brother had a conversation with them about his phone," said Indianapolis Fire and Rescue Officer Ron Oates.

Police are asking for anyone with information on Gorman's killing to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 317-7500.

Investigators believe it is possible that a video of the victim leaving the pond may be of help.

"He may have some clue who may have filmed him doing it," said Oates.

Oates says the teenager may have been on drugs at the time. Police said he was not wearing a shirt or hat at the time.

"There's a good chance that if it wasn't for that video, he would have been involved in something similar," said Oates.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on Gorman's identity to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-472-8477 or text "STOP" with your tip to CRIMES (274637).

Australia has limited emergency fuel stocks left, despite a recent spike in demand.

Australia also supplies about 80 per cent of the world's energy needs, providing about $100 billion per year.

Mr Newman said the government's efforts to boost offshore gas supply were "a huge contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions".

In the meantime, Queenslanders could be paying a price if they buy gas from overseas, according to analysts at Citi Research.

"There is likely to be a sharp jump in the price of gas in Queensland in the lead-up to the carbon tax," said Professor Mark Malthus, a leading global climate sceptic.

"It could go up by about 25 per cent or more if prices are not increased."

Police seek info in teens disappearance

Police are looking for a 14-year-old girl who is wanted on charges of battery after her family members say she told them she wasn't doing drugs.

Police say the girl said she was going to attend school and when she didn't show up for school she was angry about it. The girl told investigators she was in fear for her safety and it wasn't her fault because she didn't say she was going to get high.

On Aug. 5, authorities said, the girl, who was in Columbus, told her parents she was going to walk home to her home in the 6300 block of North Loring Lane, but left early the next day after feeling sick.

Authorities said on Aug. 13, she told her mother she was going to take off work at 2 p.m. and was going to go to lunch but when she wasn't home by 7 p.m., she turned to school and wasn't home by 4:15 p.m.

The family member then called police who, after a search of the home, found a gun with a round-shooting magazine on the kitchen counter and another gun with a round-shooting magazine in the child's room, according to court documents.

The boy was questioned and asked about drugs. After the boy agreed to give a statement, authorities said, the girl told her father that she had been in trouble with the law and hadn't taken her pills for over a week.

The boy was taken into custody on Sept. 8 and charged with aggravated battery on an officer and possession of a weapon by a felon. According to the arrest affidavit, the gun he was charged with had a round-shooter magazine.

Authorities are asking anyone with any information about this case to call them at 614-645-0270 or text "CCLEFT" to 847411.

28 rebels dead in sri lanka clashes military parade is held in Kharkiv

5 of 11 soldiers were killed during fighting in Sullom

Berkut officers killed during clashes with civilians

Nato condemns clashes between pro- and anti-government forces in southern Ukraine

The convoy's vehicle was hit by gunfire, which broke the rear glass panes of its armoured front.

In addition, pro-government forces and rebels exchanged fire.

The convoy was accompanied by four other armoured personnel carriers (APCs) equipped with 155mm howitzers and 122mm howitzers.

A source in the battalion in charge of the convoy told Interfax news agency that five of the APCs were damaged in the shooting.

It is not clear if the other four APCs suffered any damage.

The clashes started shortly before 11pm local time (0600 GMT) on Thursday, on a highway that was mostly empty.

Both sides said they had the right to carry out the operation but the UN's UN peacekeeping mission said that it had no authority to intervene, while the Ukrainian Armed Forces said there was no agreement.

The AFP news agency quoted a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission in Ukraine as saying: "There is no agreement between the parties as to the composition or deployment of forces or of the mission."

The Russian Foreign Ministry said this "concerning development... is an outrage, which must be seen objectively and immediately".

A senior Ukrainian military source confirmed this news.

"All decisions on the operation by the Ukrainians and by the international team on this matter are now subject to direct verification... I don't mean direct," said Anatoly Antonov, a former deputy commander in the Ukrainian army.

"But the Ukrainian Armed Forces are under a command structure set up specifically for this operation by the leadership and is controlled by one of its top commanders, General-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (KLA)."

A spokesman for the Dutch-based Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said the incident "raised serious concerns for the international community that it might be a turning point in the events in eastern Ukraine".

He stressed that the OSCE's presence in Ukraine had not "cared for" the "peace and stability of eastern Ukraine" and that it was "not at all clear" that all parties had agreed on the mission's composition.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric tweeted on Thursday evening: "UN monitors told us yesterday that these were two incidents in one. One in front of UN-guarded convoy and one in the vicinity of the OSCE-guarded convoy. So far that's what we've learned from our monitoring at the scene.

Fifo connection tipped to boost jobs, GDP

SALMON SPRINGS – A new study released today by the U.S. Labor Department finds that Arizona continues to be a boon to the state's economy, bringing employment in construction, wholesale and retail jobs. The study is part of the department's "Top States, Lowest Unemployment" report for April 2014.

Based on a state-by-state analysis of the employment growth for January through March, Arizona leads the country for the second consecutive month in terms of net employment growth. The state has added jobs, on average, of more than 10,000 per month in the four months since the unemployment rate dropped to 7.4 percent – an average of 2,600 jobs each month.

"Arizona continues to have a remarkable growth story since our economy was revitalized following the 2001 recession," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez. "Not only are we seeing a huge number of construction jobs, but the state's employment growth in the retail and wholesale trades has accelerated as well."

Despite the massive increases, Arizona still ranks 23rd nationally, or with a 2.6 percent unemployment rate, which is above the national average of 1.5 percent. And while it continues to be one of the most-depressed states in the nation, the state remains on track to add about 40,000 new jobs this year – a figure higher than the 40,000 that are expected to be added each month until the end of 2014.

"We're seeing these long-term jobs gains in Arizona," said Mark Perry, the U.S. Trade Representative's special assistant to the Secretary of Labor, which is responsible for trade policy in the U.S.

Among sectors contributing to the state's economic performance, manufacturing increased the most – with job gains of 7,000, about 100 jobs more than it had in January and 150 more than it had in February. Agriculture, the most important agricultural sector, led construction employment in November – the first week of January – when 14,000 more construction construction jobs were added to Arizona's economy.

The study shows that with unemployment at a nine-year low of 4.2 percent nationally, Arizona's manufacturing jobs continue to lead the country.

Arizona continues to lead the nation in its use of technology to produce goods that are manufactured in other states, but, like its neighbor, Maine, there is an increasingly high cost associated with traveling from state to state to buy goods. The state's manufacturing exports accounted for about a third of total U.S. economic output in the first quarter of 2013.

While the federal government has increased the amount of federal spending on manufacturing, it remains a smaller share of state and local budgets than in decades past. Th

Pastured egg producers say regulations destroying free range and organic farmers are having an adverse effect on their business.

The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that US egg production accounts for as much as two per cent of US livestock intake.

That figure has plunged to one in five.

The number of US chickens slaughtered for eggs declined 32 per cent last year to 4.9 million tonnes, according to the USDA.

But most farmers say they still rely on free range and organic chickens to feed their poultry flock.

'I can't tell you the number of different brands of egg I would recommend if you want to get something fresh. They are all very good,' said Debbie Lofthouse, the marketing director for the Eggland Farms organic chicken breeder in the UK, according to the AP.

Farmers who are worried are urged to go vegan or switch to organic

The USDA, for its part, says its free range requirements were designed for farmers with an agricultural income of no more than $50,000 per year, which the group defines as 100 per cent of an average American household income.

The government's website also provides some tips on how to comply with the rules.

In response to the AP's question whether consumers should take their free range chicken elsewhere, a spokesman for the USDA issued a statement saying: 'The US Food and Drug Administration requires an organic (organic free range) chicken breed be raised on the premises where it is sold. It is in the government's legal authority to enforce the rules and regulations surrounding organic chicken breeding.

Brown chooses surf over super league

The Tigers are taking a wait-and-see approach with former South Sydney Rabbitohs skipper Luke Keary in the halves.

He is out for the remainder of the year with a calf injury and Tigers coach Brad Arthur said he will play no further games.

Keary played six Tests for New South Wales under the tutelage of Laurie Daley and became coach of the NSW Blues when coach Mal Meninga was sacked in November.

The 26-year-old's injury troubles have had an impact on the Tigers' draft pick in the rookie draft.

Daniels is expected to start the Lions' first match at the Gabba before picking up an injury late in the opening round.

The Lions have only had five changes from their side that upset the Broncos in the preliminary final at ANZ Stadium.

Daley, who also made his debut for the Blues, made his return from a long-term shoulder injury during round eight and will have his first start of the season this weekend.

In contrast, the Tigers' three-quarter match-winning flanker Jordan Teret, who joined the club from the Bulldogs late last season, has been missing for much of the pre-season.

Teret has played every game for the Tigers since being drafted in the second round by coach Brad Arthur in June.

While Arthur has said he will keep hold of only those players who are truly outstanding and dependable to take that team to the top table, his approach to the club's youth team has left open the possibility of some young guys going into the senior ranks.

Gillard defends thomson over new claims

Lillard says he and his parents met with Mr. Trump before Saturday's game on Saturday morning to discuss his comments.

Mr. Trump has previously called for the immediate cancellation of the U.S. Olympic team's trip to Canada this summer for the upcoming U.S. Men's National Team game on June 8. The team has cancelled its own event after their decision to host the 2016 Summer Games in Russia in September has caused much outcry within the sports world.

Mr. Trump's decision comes after he tweeted on Friday that he will send James Harden to a "total and complete shutdown" and that the New York Knicks star would not be invited to the Team USA camp in Puerto Rico in August if "there is anybody that doesn't love this country enough to come out and give us a big group of people."

Lillard had to explain on Saturday what exactly he meant when he took to Twitter: "That (James Harden) kid, who's been in the league 15 years, has never been to Puerto Rico and he wouldn't be invited to the camp on the 12th [of August]. That's what it was about. We talked about the travel for the team and we knew how bad it would be."

Lillard's comments come as the basketball world weighs how to handle Mr. Trump's controversial comments that have created such controversy in the country's sports past.

After weeks of outrage from the Canadian Olympic team and athletes, the president tweeted Friday: "We need to move past the distraction of the Woman's March and focus on the issues that matter: getting our country back on the right path. Witch Hunt going strong in Washington!"

Volkswagen fined billions in emissions scandal"

By Jonathan Davies, The Observer, 27 March 2015

Volkswagen AG – known for its Volkswagen emissions scandal and a raft of scandals involving VW engineers and managers – paid nearly $10 billion in fines to over a dozen countries as part of its deal to settle with U.S. and British authorities on April 1, 2015.

This includes $3.2 billion in fines and a $1.1 billion settlement to settle claims that the company improperly encouraged or helped employees cheat on fuel efficiency tests.

Volkswagen was found guilty of using deception to defraud investors, including the World Wildlife Fund, the United Nations Environment Program and others.

The fine announced on the eve of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) announcement last week on fines for the US and Canadian carmakers will be seen as a victory for the EPA. The company had been battling for years to resolve its problems with climate-driven emissions and emissions controls in the US and globally, after years of underperforming on emissions tests in Europe and Asia.

The company was found to have helped two of its own executives cheat in their own countries by using an internal software feature for calculating fuel economy when the company tested the cars for the WWF.

VW's US lawyer, Bob Jordan, said in a statement released Tuesday that the company will donate $250,000 of the "substantial fine" to two American charities supporting the WWF's work. VW also pledged to give the remaining $100,000 to American and British environmental groups involved in climate change issues and other matters, including the UN's environment program, the WWF's Global Clean Energy program and the American Lung Association.

The penalties for VW's crimes against the environment are not likely to be large, says the group that sued the carmaker, the Environmental Integrity Project, but Jordan argues that they represent "a huge victory for US workers in light of the company's emissions cheating."

"The fine to date from the US Environmental Protection Agency, $3.2 billion for the VW and California emissions scandal and a $1 billion fine to be paid by the EPA to settle emissions scandal cases by Volkswagen, gives new meaning to the slogan 'the biggest environmental loser in history,' as the company faces major financial penalties in a number of countries," said Steve D'Alesandro, a senior fellow with the EIP.

The group estimates that VW has spent about $20 billion to cover the $10 billion of fines and the billions of dollars in costs that VW will pay the other US auto firms after the Justice Department and VW agree to pay back billions of dollars of the penalty and settle.

The fines will help VW to pay back some of the approximately $26 billion that V

Swimmers do the hard yards ahead of london games

The London 2012 Olympics were a success, but it would be wrong to say that it was a fluke. In fact it was another sign of a trend. As well as the sheer numbers swimming athletes will bring in the Olympics in 2012, their competitors, like this swimmers, will be bigger, stronger, faster and more agile than the average swimmers of their generation.

And, let's face it, there is a sense of urgency to compete for silver or bronze. If you think it can't happen – well look at the number of times we've had a winning swimming race in London in the last two decades. At the 2008 Beijing games, in fact, eight swimmers won medals. At the 2004 Athens Games, there were 21 medals. And last September, more than 200 swimmers qualified for the opening and closing ceremonies of London 2012, including the London 2012 team that won bronze, as well as swimmers from New York, Los Angeles and other locations. In any event, Olympic swimmer swimmers will be looking to improve on their results in Beijing, Athens and Los Angeles.

It's not just swimmers who have changed over the last couple of decades. Over the past ten years or so, the numbers of male and female gymnasts have grown exponentially. As these Olympic swimmers grow stronger they also move to become more and more diverse in stature and in age. For example, gymnasts from London 2013 have moved up to be more than 80 centimetres tall in men, up from 66 centimetres in 1996 and 56 centimetres in 2000.

We've seen this trend play out elsewhere. Two gymnasts from the 1992 world championships went on to compete in Rio de Janeiro, the men in charge of their country winning the gold medal.

The most successful athletes from these Olympic events have always been those who have been born around the same time as these games took place. There has been a long tradition of those born in 1989 and earlier competing in events at the same time. But these athletes have always been young because they have often been from countries where the average age of a child at the time they began school was 13.

In the Olympic games, at least four of these athletes from these countries have won gold – Olympic gold for the third time, gold for the first time and bronze for the first time – for their country.

One of the most recent gold-winning Olympic swimmers from Nigeria has won silver for the USA in the event that he qualified for (although he is a Jamaican so we won't bother him with a specific name he didn't win in). He is one of only three female swimming athletes who has competed at an international level for at least two years and has won Olympic medal

Defence force contractor to face court over awas probe Read more

One witness said: "I was a little surprised at what he was saying, to the effect he wouldn't believe me." The case is set to go to court later this year.

"I never dreamed my life would come crashing down in the face of a giant robot," said another witness at the trial.

It follows reports that an armed security guard at the site has died in what the Guardian newspaper alleged was a hit-and-run accident. That report, citing unnamed police sources, claimed at the time that the guard had been found "under heavy gunfire and not conscious".

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence confirmed it had received the police complaint but declined to comment further.

The incident happened shortly before 10am. The Guardian reported that the guard, aged 42, had been hit by an armoured vehicle and died at the scene. A spokesman for the local police said there was "no reason to doubt that the guard was not at fault" as he had been in the area for the majority of the afternoon when he died.

Sgt Andrew Walker, who commanded the army's armed forces helicopter unit at the time, said the accident was not believed to be related to the robot but confirmed to the Guardian that he and others had not been aware the drill had been scheduled until the accident.

A Defence Ministry spokesman told the Guardian that the guard had left the area on a routine exercise. The spokesman did not know if that was what caused the crash, but denied that the guard was using the robot that was being used to test the company's defensive manoeuvres.

"I can confirm that it is possible we were not aware at the time of any changes in deployment plans for an armed force vehicle," the spokesman said.

"We are working closely with defence suppliers and security company companies, who we are confident we will have all the information we need by the time we get to the hearing in April of next year to help mitigate any damage to the local population."

Walker had also said that the drill was not scheduled to be suspended but that it would be looked at. He said: "If it is decided that this should be, and if there's not more than a small risk of this happening in a given training day, we can't see it as possible to suspend it."

The spokesman declined to say how a court decision would impact on the police's investigation into the guard's death and how the trial would likely be conducted.

Govt wants plane emissions cut but critics call for cleaner aviation

Updated

Air emissions are a major concern for business as an airline and an airport and a coalition of residents say the Government is making little progress in its efforts to reduce aircraft emissions.

A majority of residents oppose airfares in Sydney and Brisbane but it is clear the Government has no plans to take action.

One local resident who lives in a quiet area north of the city, Tim, said the Government must show it understands the problem.

"We have seen an increase in aircraft emissions over the last three months that's caused a significant threat to the environment," he said.

He said the government had "put all their effort and money in, they've said we have to be on the cutting edge and now they've just done nothing".

Tim has taken to Facebook to share his concerns with fellow citizens who use the jetting area in the city.

"We want everyone to know we do not tolerate this rubbish," he said.

"We don't accept the people who fly on it and all this pollution and no one is being held to account because it's all being done by the Government for their own benefit."

In response to an Australian Business Traveller investigation, Environment Minister Greg Hunt has confirmed the Government is looking into the issue.

"I have spoken to the Federal Environment Minister, the Premier, the Treasurer and they have discussed the issue and they have all been made aware of it," he said.

Mr Hunt added the Government had a commitment to do "everything we possibly can" to reduce aircraft emissions and that the Government would work with industry to make the best decision.

"We are committed to improving our aviation operations so that we can continue to take sensible steps to improve Australia's air quality, our cities, our beaches and our regional air quality, which impacts people around the country in communities around the country," Mr Hunt said.

"To that effect we will be working with industry to support those efforts to reduce aircraft emissions, and we will work with stakeholders to understand the challenges and challenges faced in reducing this level of emissions."

No verdict reached over babys manslaughter

An eight-year-old boy died when his grandfather, 45-year-old Scott Loomis, hit him with an outdoor hammer he found in a lawn chair while babysitting him at his family's home in Albermarle County, N.C.

Loomis was charged last year with one count of misdemeanor homicide.

District Attorney Joe Deters announced Friday that the charges against Loomis in the boy's death will be dismissed due to insufficient evidence of criminal intent.

"Unfortunately, all that matters to us is the truth," said Deters.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Deters announced on Friday that Loomis will not be prosecuted for the March 2, 2014, death of his grandson, a 7-year-old boy whose grandmother babysat him while she was out of town on business.

"We believe it was an accident," said Deters. "His grandmother was able to stop him from killing the child that her grandson was being babysat when she was at work. It happened very quickly and I want everybody who has been in the situation to know that it will not be tolerated in this case."

Detectives with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office searched Loomis' home and located what they believed was a tool that resembled an oversized hammer.

"It was a large metal object with a metal frame, but there was no way of measuring it precisely," said Deters. "When we found it, I immediately said that that's too big. I said it's an outdoor hammer that looks like a hammer, but when we looked at it and touched it, it was an object larger than any other large object I have ever seen anywhere. At least one witness said it was like a hammer with a large hole in it."

Loomis was arraigned on charges of murder and child abuse Thursday and was released on bail.
